You’ll need to condition your pet and work up to more intense activities, just as you need to do yourself if you haven’t worked out in awhile.

A good starting point for most dogs is a 10-15 minute, moderately paced walk. You can work up to 30 minutes, three times a week or, for athletic breeds, up to an hour per session. If you don’t have time to take your dog for regular walks, hiring a dog walker, or taking your dog to a supervised doggy day care, will provide a great alternative.

And for cats:

Cats, especially the indoor variety, can be harder to keep active but a bit of ingenuity on your part will go a long way. Experiment with a variety of toys for your cat and change them often to prevent boredom.

Most cats enjoy catnip-filled toys, such as Nigel the Octopus from GreenerWiener.com or mouse toys like the 100% natural Wooley Bully.

Another simple option to keep cats entertained is a flashlight or laser pointer. Cats will wear themselves out trying to “catch” the light, and SixWise.com highly recommends the Ba-Da-Beam Hands-Free Rotating Laser Chaser from GreenerWiener.com for all cat owners.

And some safety tips:

When exercising your cat or dog, be sure to watch for signs of overexertion, such as excessive panting or lying down. These are signs that it’s time for a break. Also, be especially careful when exercising pets with flat faces, such as pugs, bulldogs and Persian cats, as they are vulnerable to respiratory distress.

Other breeds may also be prone to overexertion or injury, including toy breeds, dachshunds, young puppies and older pets, so always use caution and pay attention to cues from your pet.

You’ll also want to avoid exercising your dog in extreme heat or cold, which can lead to hypothermia, heat stress and over-exhaustion. In bad weather, take your dog to an indoor play park, or teach him to walk (with your assistance) on a treadmill!

Of course, always make sure your pet has access to fresh water during any exercise session.

If you do not have the time or energy to exercise your pet(s), that is one of the services At Home Pet Sitting will gladly provide for you.

Related articles by Zemanta

Take Care Of Cats (animaltopics.com)

<fb:share-button href="http://www.athomepetsitting.com/dogs/pet-exercise-tips/" type="button"></fb:share-button>

Dusty loved us and we loved Dusty.

Dogs

Our family

Our fosters

dog

foster

This was Dusty. Pets are extremely sensitive to their effects, and may experience stomach and intestinal ulcers and—in the case of cats—kidney damage.

Antidepressants
Antidepressants can cause vomiting and lethargy and certain types can lead to serotonin syndrome—a condition marked by agitation, elevated body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure, disorientation, vocalization, tremors and seizures.

Acetaminophen
Cats are especially sensitive to acetaminophen, which can damage red blood cells and interfere with their ability to transport oxygen. In dogs, it can cause liver damage and, at higher doses, red blood cell damage.

Methylphenidate (for ADHD)
Medications used to treat ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in people act as stimulants in pets and can dangerously elevate heart rates, blood pressure and body temperature, as well as cause seizures.

Fluorouracil
Fluorouracil—an anti-cancer drug—is used topically to treat minor skin cancers and solar keratitis in humans. It has proven to be rapidly fatal to dogs, causing severe vomiting, seizures and cardiac arrest even in those who’ve chewed on discarded cotton swabs used to apply the medication.

Isoniazid
Often the first line of defense against tuberculosis, isoniazid is particularly toxic for dogs because they don’t metabolize it as well as other species. It can cause a rapid onset of severe seizures that may ultimately result in death.

Pseudoephedrine
Pseudoephedrine is a popular decongestant in many cold and sinus products, and acts like a stimulant if accidentally ingested by pets. In cats and dogs, it causes elevated heart rates, blood pressure and body temperature as well as seizures.

Anti-diabetics
Many oral diabetes treatments—including glipizide and glyburide—can cause a major drop in blood sugar levels of affected pets. Clinical signs of ingestion include disorientation, lack of coordination and seizures.

Vitamin D derivatives
Even small exposures to Vitamin D analogues like calcipotriene and calcitriol can cause life-threatening spikes in blood calcium levels in pets. Clinical signs of exposure—including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased urination and thirst due to kidney failure—often don’t occur for more than 24 hours after ingestion.

Baclofen
Baclofen is a muscle relaxant that can impair the central nervous systems of cats and dogs. Some symptoms of ingestion include significant depression, disorientation, vocalization, seizures and coma, which can lead to death.

If you suspect your pet has ingested any of the following items, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435. And remember to keep all medications tucked away in bathroom cabinets—and far from curious cats and dogs.

Please also remember that chocolate is also deadly for dogs and dark chocolate is the most deadly. Keep all of these items safely tucked away from your loved one(s) at all times.
<fb:share-button href="http://www.athomepetsitting.com/dogs/human-medications-that-are-poison-for-dogs/" type="button"></fb:share-button>

At September 12, 2009, Hank Marshall<img style='float: left; margin-right: 10px; border: none; display:inline;'' src='http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/4cc3ae914f3d56887df0ba5e59164eef?rating=PG&default=wavatar' alt='No Gravatar' width=40 height=40/> wrote:

Question-- about the use of baby aspirin for dogs pain.

Some articles say it is OK-- some say NOT.

All say to NOT use Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

What is the truth about aspirin use for dogs?

PuBear

Dogs

Our fosters

This is our most recent foster dog. He is about 9 years old. Has a little sneeze. When he is excited he twirls around but it is always in the clockwise direction. Compared to our other dogs, he is about the size of one of their heads. Marcy could be a relative of my boy.

At November 12, 2008, admin<img style='float: left; margin-right: 10px; border: none; display:inline;'' src='http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/249191fcaa272874a13c4ad4b1a24b90?rating=PG&default=wavatar' alt='No Gravatar' width=40 height=40/> wrote:

She is about 18 months in the photos. Lots of love and affection. I have a pit/lab mix that I rescued at 7 months. Upon his arrival into my home, he was a terror. I tried yelling, swatting him with a newspaper, etc to get him to stop going on the floor. I felt terrible doing this so I asked a dear friend how to handle this situation. She told me a big secret about these dogs. Talk to them sternly but softly when they do something you consider to be bad. They will respond more effectivly to your voice. If you yell, they retreat and become nervous. Well, as soon as I began to be in control and calmly speak to my puppy, he started to learn rapidly. By nine months he was fully trained and no longer tore up my favorite shoes. He is 4 years old today, and the best dog in the world. He is so good, that I seldom use a leash when we take walks together. He is so well behaved, even without any formal training. Duke is my first dog. After being a cat owner for 30 years, Duke was a handful. Today, I can say that I will never regret the rescue of my sweet little guy named Duke. They also love to be pet and praised frequently. A pit/lab makes for a great pet. Loyal, loving and generally great with people. My dog is also very friendly to cats. We like to call him CatDog. He seems to think he is a cat at times. I guess because he was raised in a home with 2 felines. Good luck to you and your pit lab/mix.

At January 12, 2009, MARTHA<img style='float: left; margin-right: 10px; border: none; display:inline;'' src='http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/cc044777d5b4bd15e64fe4b6f7996f5a?rating=PG&default=wavatar' alt='No Gravatar' width=40 height=40/> wrote:

WE HAVE A TEN MONTH OLD LAB/PIT MIX NAMED HOOK. She didn't even have her fangs all the way in yet. I already had a small dog at home and they grew up together and ate together no problem, until Naga (my black lab/pit mix) got bigger than Azurl (my schnauzer/wire hair/whatever else mix). She started getting aggressive with the food, so I started putting the food bowl down and letting her start to eat, then taking it away. If she snarled at me or growled i would give her a gentle smack on the nose with a stern "no!" then put her food bowl back down, let Azurl eat, and hold her away from it and make her sit and watch for about thirty seconds. Took about three days to get her to stop nipping at her.

At February 22, 2010, Dianna<img style='float: left; margin-right: 10px; border: none; display:inline;'' src='http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/48b5ef0f3c2950360cc86410944e3761?rating=PG&default=wavatar' alt='No Gravatar' width=40 height=40/> wrote:

I too have a black lab/pit bull mix.Hes seven weeks old and about the cutest thing youve ever seen.I was kind of worried about the pit bull part of him but the mother who is a pit seemed really well natured so i gave it a shot.Hes a little nippy but really super smart. Its only been a week and he uses his paper about 70 percent of the time.I really hope hell get along well with my 4 kids in the long run . He is clingy to me and my fiancee he sits with but wont listen to commands from him. He is a little shy around people he doesnt know, but he is getting better already I think that will take some time as he was left outside alone for the first 15 weeks of life...with only his brothers and sisters. Some thing i need help with are.....eating, shyness, and training tips. He wont eat unless i am right there and he just macks it down then does somthing else. How can i get him to eat? The other thing is traning, him he is potty trained, knows his name and can sit along with sign language and ALMOST got him laying down....does anyone have any tips for training him more effectively and faster? I had 2 boxers before that were easy to train but they never stuck around, always ran off when not on a leash...one got hit and the other just collapsed and died on me :( NO MORE BOXERS FOR ME! Anyway, he is a little stubborn when training.....Please email me with any help....otherwise he is the best dog I have ever had so far!!! I am very happy with him....he sticks around doesnt run off (so far fingers crossed). I would recommened this type of dog to anyway.

PS my 2 friends have the 3 others, one has the female and my other friend has the other 2 males and they are very satisfied with them as well.
